Forum: etree Subject: MOVING DAY! LMA going "readonly" for about 24 hours

hello music lovers!

We are about to finish the switchover of our older storage and upload system (Live Music Archive is the last group to move. This has taken us 18 months to convert our entire site!)

We plan to turn the LMA shows "readonly" for about a day (to ensure we get all your great reviews and metadata changes safely).

The plan is to cut over the website tomorrow, Wed May 10
to our shiny new look.

Some things to expect:
-bands will have their own details pages. they can now get their own collection header images and custom text and descriptions.

-shows will have a very neat new flash-based player setup by the legendary jon aizen (who is still working remotely towards this transition, yay). You'll be able to easily click through MP3 tracks (for shows with them) and listen right in the details page.

-the look will change quite a bit overall. we've tried to retain as much as possible of the features and spirit of the old system. still, some changes will take effect. for example, we presently don't have a "this day in time" browsing feature yet.

-some features will be added as quick as we can if they are missing and buggy. we will do our best to fix things.

-due to space issues, SHN and FLAC zips have *not* been retained. we plan to have "zip on the fly" working but it is reportedly quite buggy right at the moment and we will work to fix that. we might try to come up with a better way to make it easy for folks to download all the SHN or FLAC or VBR MP3s or 64kb MP3s for an item. we are doing our best to work on this.

-"better" urls for shows -- you'll be getting urls with "/details/" just like the rest of our site.

-for contributors, a newer upload system and details editing system. you'll also get a much more "open to you" item management suite -- you'll be able to do things like rederive your item on your own or remove, add, or replace files in your item with ease.

Thanks for working with us during this transition period. Your patience and continued uploads and downloads on our site is ever appreciated!

With best regards,
Tracey, webmaster and petabox engineer
(with Jon, webmaster and petabox engineer emeritus, current consultant, and spirit of the Archive)

[UPDATE: May 10 3:30pm PacTime -- new system is live and updates and new content may resume, yay! enjoy!]

We might try to come up with a better way to make it easy for folks to download all the SHN or FLAC or VBR MP3s or 64kb MP3s for an item. we are doing our best to work on this.

A download manager such as the advertising free NeTransport would do this easily. Mine is set to the PHILZONE standard of "two" simultaneous connections for reliability and to avoid hogging bandwith. No need to baby sit Internet Explorer all night long either.

In that case, we don't even need the whole show in a big zip file. Save yourselves the space for more music.

Never had a problem doing it this way. I'd never use those download managers (DAP etc) which make 4 and 5 connections. Every 4th, 5th, or 6th SHN file was corrupted. Never used DAP with FLAC sets; so I don't know if it produces corrupt files in that case...

Maybe it is just early in the day, but I am not too sure if I understand your plans for lossless shows. Are you planning on returning them to the service and if not, how can this possibly be described as "progress"? MP3s are for pimply-faced teenagers who don't know any better.

This is very depressing as I have been telling everyone I know to look at the archive (text, music and film), but it will be a WHOLE lot less attractive if it is an MP3 only site (see reference to pimply faced teenagers).

Lossless files are in the items as normal, unless you have certain Grateful Dead AUD examples in mind. There is a known post-changeover bug with those that engineers will be fixing in coming days.

Or if you're asking about zipped lossless, reread this part:

Since you mentioned Stuffit, bet that's this, way preceding any changeover:

Hi Diana and fellow travelers, What does "zip on the fly mean"? Is it available yet? My main desire is to clarify the process we must now undertake to download complete shows in Lossless format. Do we now need to go through the All Files link to FTP HTTP, find the individual song/track file and download each file individually? How do we do it now?

My understanding of "zip on the fly" is that the archive will no longer have archived zip files of entire shows. Instead, you'll be able to click on download entire show in lossless format and the archive will create a zip file (on the fly!) for you to download. This is an efficiency issue regarding storage I assume.

I also understand that this function is not yet implemented. So in the meantime you must download each file one at a time. However, there are ways to make this much easier (in fact easier than even using zip files). Here's what I do:

1. download the free "Firefox" browser. Of course you can still use any other browser as well for other stuff if you choose. I have IE, netscape, and Firefox on my machine, but almost always use Firefox for everything.

http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

2. Within Firefox, you'll want to add the "DownThemAll" extension.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/201/

3. Once you're running Firefox with "downthemall" you can use downthem all to automatically download all the files of interest from a particular page. Simply go to the page for a particular show. Then click on "tools" and "downthemall". Within Downthemall you'll see several options. You can set the destination directory for saving the files. Then simply select the files you'd like to save and hit start. It will download all those files to the selected directory.

4. An even easier method is to use the "filter" option within DownthemAll. Here I create a filter that automatically selects ".flac" or ".shn" or "vbr.mp3". Then, when I'm on a show page, I simply start DownthemAll, click on the filter I want to use (e.g., flac), then hit start. DownthemAll automatically selects all files meeting that filter and starts downloading them.

I hope this helps.

Is there an issue with downloading GD AUDS? 1980 -05-12 for example...

Thanks!

Known issue on the to-do list. See some other threads from past couple days.

Okay, everyone - 1,2,3, *WHEW*. Thanks for the hard work and effort (not to mention expense), as well as the pre-emptive post to let us know the sky is not falling. Thank you for all you've done over the years for us. :-)
